Unshackle Upstate commends the New York State Legislature for reducing the growth rate of spending - especially in an election year. Their action, along with what they didn't do - raise taxes - is a good step in the right direction.
Governor Paterson's leadership to bring New York State's spending, borrowing and taxes under control demonstrates to us that he's listening to New York families, employers and recent graduates. New Yorkers want to stay in our state, but need relief from Albany's excessive spending in order to ensure an affordable long term future in the Empire State.
It is critical that the next action taken in Albany be to approve a property tax cap. A circuit breaker alone without a cap is not a solution at all. It would only shift the burden among taxpayers, not address root causes of the problem. A tax cap must be the first step taken to get spending under control.
