ATHENA Award recipient 2008

The Women's Council of the Rochester Business Alliance presented its 2008 ATHENA Award to Dr. Ruth Lawrence.

Lawrence, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, received the award at the 22nd annual ATHENA Awards luncheon attended by almost 1,000 people today (Jan. 24) at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. She was chosen for the award from a field of 21 finalists nominated by the community.

"Babies are my business - actually, children are my business. A lot of people wonder what to invest in these days. If you're looking for something to invest in, may I suggest children? Children are our future," Lawrence said in accepting the award.

The award is given annually to a local professional woman who has demonstrated significant achievements in business, community service and the professional advancement of women. Those nominating Lawrence cited her success in blazing the trail for women interested in a career in the medical field. Dr. Lawrence has been a mentor and role model throughout her career, as well as an author, co-founder of LifeLine, and the recipient of lifetime achievement awards from many organizations.
