Monroe County Sales Tax Increase
Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks has proposed to increase the sales tax to 8.75 percent in order to close a budget deficit.
PositionThe Rochester Business Alliance opposes the proposed Monroe County sales tax increase because it would hurt Monroe County retailers, restaurants and other small businesses that compete for sales. It will also raise the cost of living for area residents, and further increase a state and local tax burden that is already highest in the nation - 60 percent higher than the national average, according to an April report from the State Comptroller's office.
Instead of raising taxes, we believe that all levels of government must reduce expenses.
The bottom line is that our members cannot afford an increase in the sales tax, property tax or in any other taxes or fees. Again, instead of raising the sales tax we encourage dialogue on alternatives such as cost-savings measures.
