This health, safety and environment electronic update comes from Chip Dawson and the Rochester Business Alliance as a service to member companies. There are currently 253 names on the list. Safety Savings Calculator for Health Care... For a calculator that will determine return on investment from safe lifting programs in hospitals and healthcare facilities, click here. Handbook for Teachers... If you are looking for a comprehensive, free handbook on how to teach, click here. Created the Federal Aviation Administration, this is a 185-page aviation instructor's handbook that has almost nothing to do with aviation. Instead, the handbook teaches you how to teach others, introducing you to learning theory, educational psychology, effective communication, teaching methods, and much more. Since tax dollars paid for this, feel free to print and redistribute this as often as you would like. Survey Says Password Burden Poses Security Risks... According to a report in the September 26 issue of Security Products E-News, RSA Security has polled businesses on issues pertaining to password management and has confirmed that the burden of multiple passwords continues to pose significant security risks, and encourages end-user behavior that endangers compliance initiatives. "While companies pour huge amounts of time and money into protecting sensitive information, business passwords remain one of the weakest links in the security chain, in large part due to the sheer number of passwords that end users are required to manage," said John Worrall, senior vice president of marketing at RSA Security. "Little has changed since 2005. End users are still managing an overwhelming number of passwords, and this is resulting in behaviors which open the door to security breaches and potential compliance issues." Q&A... Pandemic planning advice normally mentions the storage of food and water for emergency use when access to stores and community water supplies may be cut off. How long can drinking water be stored until it needs to be changed? The American Red Cross recommends drinking water supplies in storage be rotated every six months. Safe Use of Cleaning Products... Whether it's at work or home, common cleaning products can give off fumes that exceed acceptable exposure limits says the UC Berkley Wellness Letter for October. To avoid problems, the best solution is lots of ventilation during and after cleaning. Also, they suggest, use the smallest amounts of cleaner to do the job, rinse surfaces thoroughly, recap containers immediately, discard paper towels used in an outside container and rinse other items, use a respirator when spraying, and avoid cleaners with fragrances. A good alternative is often plain soap and water or a vinegar solution. To find information on environmentally safe cleaning products, click here. For information on cleaning products, click here.
